A Commercial Renovation Project; Unique Needs and Requirements

A Commercial Renovation Project; Unique Needs and Requirements

Finding just the right contractor for a commercial renovation project is imperative. After all, there are many aspects of this type renovation vastly different from those that are residential.

Montreal, Toronto, and Calgary business owners know that professional contractors with experience in commercial renovations will best understand their unique needs. Regardless whether the project demands interior or exterior structural changes, or just cosmetic.

Special Electrical Service Considerations

Whether the business is a corporate giant, a modest business with less than 10 employees, or a small family business, most commercial renovation projects require special considerations.

For instance, say the project entails converting a structure into office space for a small business that will be using various office machines such as computers, faxes, scanners, copiers, and the like. Special requirements for upgraded electrical service will have to be taken into account.

A reliable contractor with experience in commercial renovations will know that upgrading from one level of electrical service to another can represent a sizeable investment. Therefore, upgrading to a higher level than what is required might be the most prudent move. This would allow for the expansion of the business without incurring the additional cost of another electrical service upgrade at a later date.

The same is true for structural design and floor space. Commercial renovation contractors take these considerations and more into account when still in the planning stage.

Cosmetic Renovation Considerations

Even less involved renovations that are mostly cosmetic in nature require special considerations. Commercial renovation contractors will know what precautions to take to safely move office equipment to another area during the renovation process.

Business employees will be encouraged to back up important computer files on disks before computers are moved, to avoid any possible loss of important data. The contractor will also help insure that computers are properly packed, whether using the original cartons they were purchased in, or else some other type carton that provides a protective, snug fit. TIP: computers should never be wrapped in plastic, since condensation could form and damage the computer.

Building/Renovation Considerations

Whether or not a permit is required for the particular project involved, commercial renovations must abide by special government, district, and city codes and regulations that differ from residential codes.

For instance, hard-wired interconnected smoke detectors, a sprinkler system throughout the interior of the business, and two accessible emergency exit points might be required. Any reconstruction, renovation, repair, alteration, or structural addition to a business must recognize these features and not impede their purpose.

Renovation projects that include replacement of plumbing when fixture locations are not changed might not require a special permit, while projects that require changing a fixture’s location would.

Restroom requirements and restrictions are another consideration when it comes to making commercial building and renovation plans. As are disassembly, wreckage, and relocation factors associated with businesses.

This is why it is important to seek only the services of a licensed professional renovation contractor. Contractors who are experienced with commercial renovations will know what requirements must be met in order to complete the project right.

Urine Stains on Hard Surface Floors Information

Urine Stains on Hard Surface Floors Information

Rub with a hot, damp cloth and scouring powder. For old stubborn stains, use a 10 to 1 dilution of liquid bleach. Rinse well with clean water.

Cautions: When working with any chemicals, carefully read and follow the label directions for using that chemical, especially any cautions on safe use! With solvents, be very careful to have ventilation, and no flame or spark in area!

The first time you use any procedure on any floor, test it first on an out-of-the-way part of the floor to be sure it does not damage the flooring or finish.

Notes: If steel wool is suggested, use fine grade, 000 grade.

Scouring powder will help remove many stains, but can also permanently scratch the floor. If you decide to use it, use only a mild type, and be very careful about rubbing too much.

Concentrated liquid commercial household cleaners, rubbed onto a stubborn spot, may remove it as well as scouring powders without the danger of scratching. Rinse off well. Do not use on wood floors.

Do not use water solutions, or cleaners which have to be rinsed off with water, on wood floors. Use a solvent or solvent-based cleaning wax.

After removing a stain, rinse the area thoroughly, dry completely, and, if floor finish has been removed in that area, recoat with appropriate finish or wax.

Kitchen Cabinets - Special Cleaning Information

Kitchen Cabinets - Special Cleaning Information

Some wood cabinet cleaners contain waxes which leave a shine or medium luster on the surface, and protect the wood. If the wood finish seems dull after cleaning, you may want to apply a solvent-based wood wax, which may or may not require buffing to create a luster.

Painted, plastic, and metal surfaces, may be cleaned occasionally with a creamy liquid wax which leaves a protective coating which retards soiling. If the finish is hard and in good condition, this extra step may not be needed.

NEVER use scouring powder or other abrasives on cabinets as they will damage the finish! On painted metal, or plastic surfaces, using an appropriate spray-on all-purpose household cleaner on stubborn sticky spots should remove them; rinse thoroughly afterward.

On natural finished wood, with a heavy buildup of grease and grime, that will not come off with special wood cleaners, you may need to use a straight solvent such as paint thinner. This is highly flammable and toxic to breathe. BE SURE THERE ARE NO OPEN FLAMES OR PILOT LIGHTS OR SPARKS IN THE KITCHEN OR IN ROOMS AROUND THE KITCHEN, AND HAVE OPEN WINDOWS FOR GOOD VENTILATION. REMOVING DOORS AND DRAWERS AND WORKING OUTDOORS, WITH NO FLAMES OR SPARKS NEARBY, MAY BE A GOOD ALTERNATIVE.

Test on the inside of a door to be sure it will not harm the finish. Dampen a cloth with the thinner-solvent and rub vigorously on the cabinets. Refold the cloth as it picks up dirt, and change to clean cloths when needed, storing used cloths in a closed metal or glass container for disposal. If after this heavy cleaning, the finish looks dull, apply furniture wax or polish, following the label directions, and buff. If, after cleaning, the finish looks too bad, they may need refinishing.

How to Apply Lap Siding

How to Apply Lap Siding

Before you start nailing up siding boards, be sure to read through the information on preparing the wall. When you have the siding delivered, allow the wood to acclimate to local humidity. Store boards flat, raised above the ground on blocks or scraps. To make painting or staining the siding easier later on, prime or pre-finish it before installation and then touch up the cut ends as you work.

Plan your layout, and decide how you will treat the corners. When working out your layout, try to allow the siding boards to fit seamlessly around windows, doors, and other openings. With horizontal siding, a slight adjustment to your baseline may do the trick. Where you must butt board ends together, stagger the joints.

Nailing

Nail each board individually; do not nail through overlapping parts. Be careful not to dent the board's surface when nailing. Use stainless-steel, high-tensile aluminum or hot-dipped galvanized siding or box nails. Spiral or ring-shank nails offer the best holding power.

Choose nails that are long enough to penetrate the studs by at least 1-1/4 inches. Boards that are 6 inches wide and narrower require only one nail per stud; wider boards require two.

Cutting

Mark all 90-degree cuts using a combination square. Then do the cutting with a power circular saw, a handsaw, or (if available) a table saw or radial-arm saw.

First Board

The first board goes at the bottom. Most types require a 1-by-2 starter strip beneath the board's lower edge, along the wall's base, so the first board's angle will match the angle of the other boards.

Successive Boards

To lay out horizontal board siding, you will need to use a 'story pole,' made from a 1 by 2 that is as long as your tallest wall's height (unless that wall is more than one story). Make it as shown in Step 3 below.

Corners & Tops of Walls

When you are installing horizontal siding, determine whether the cornice will be open or closed before nailing the last board in place at the top of the wall. Where the boards must be cut at an angle to match the roofline, figure out and cut the angle as shown in Step 7 below.

Open & Closed Cornices

Cornices (sometimes called soffits) are often left open with wood-board siding so that the boards extend to the tops of the rafters. For this method, notch the board ends where they intersect rafters, and caulk the ends thoroughly once they are in place. Trim along the top edge, between the rafters, using quarter-round moulding or a narrow trim board (called a 'frieze board'). If you prefer a closed cornice, you can build one using a special wood board called a plowed fascia board plus roofing material. A plowed fascia board, nailed over the rafter ends or existing fascia, has a routed groove near one edge for holding soffit boards or panels.

1. Build a corner trim from a 1 by 3 and a 1 by 4, and then snap a level chalk line to indicate the top edge of the first length of siding. Next, measure down the width of your siding, and run a 1-by-2 starter strip along the wall's base to hold the first siding board at the proper angle.

2. Butt the first siding board in place against the corner, so that its top edge is aligned with the chalk line. Have a helper hold one end as you nail the other. Drive galvanized nails through the siding into the starter strip, spacing them 6 inches apart.

3. Make a story pole for transferring measurements from one corner to the next and to window and door frames. To make this, mark a 1 by 2 at intervals equaling the width of the siding boards. Then transfer these marks to each corner.

4. Overlap 1 inch of the first siding board with the second one, aligning the ends of the second board with the story-pole marks at the corners. Be sure the board fits snugly up against each corner, straight along its length and level, and then nail it in place. Place the nails about 1 inch up from the lower edge.

5. Repeat this process as you apply the other siding boards up the wall. Use the story pole to transfer the marks for siding placement onto the door and window frames.

6. Where two siding boards must be joined end-to-end, plan to center the joint over a framing member. Make very straight cuts to form a snug butt joint. Apply caulking compound to the board ends, nail them in place, and wipe off excess caulk.

7. If you'll be applying siding under gabled eaves (where the roofline is angled like the one shown), use a bevel gauge to establish the proper angle for cutting the boards. Transfer this angle to each board end, and then cut.

Types of Siding: Exterior Plywood Siding

Types of Siding: Exterior Plywood Siding

Types & Characteristics: Most siding species are Douglas fir, Western red cedar, redwood, and Southern pine. Broad range of textures and patterns. Sheets are 4 feet wide, 8 to 10 feet long. Lap boards are 6 to 12 inches wide and 16 feet long. Thicknesses of both are 3/8 to 5/8 inch.

Durability: Thirty years to life of building, depending on maintenance.

Maintenance: Before using, seal all edges with water repellent, stain sealer, or exterior house paint primer. Restain or repaint every five years.

Installation: Sheets go up quickly. Manageable with basic carpentry skills and tools.

Advantages & Disadvantages: Can add great structural support to a wall. Burns. May 'check' (show small surface cracks). Susceptible to termite damage when in direct contact with soil and to water rot if not properly finished.

Unsecured Home Improvement Loans

Unsecured Home Improvement Loans

There are two kinds of loans, secured and unsecured. Secured loans are secured on property. This means that borrower uses his home or some of his property or assets as a guarantee to the lending company. If the borrower fails to repay, the lender can claim the secured property. Because the lender has this security, he is able to offer lower rates of interest. Thus the relationship is most certainly mutually beneficial in general.

Some loans are not secured against the assets of the borrower. They are called unsecured loans. There is no need for borrower to use his/her property as collateral to the lender. The lender has no rights to the assets of the borrower. In the event of the borrower defaulting on repayments of the loan, the lender may take the legal actions and may sue for repayment. Since the lender has no security, the interest rate charged will almost certainly be higher than for secured loans. These rates can be variable or fixed rates.

Unsecured loans are probably more suitable for people who do not want to keep their property as collateral and who would rather pay a higher rate of interest. Since these loans come with higher rate of interest and high monthly repayment option, borrowings must be planned with proper care.

Unsecured loans are a popular way to pay for home improvements, either small improvements or improvements designed to enhance the quality of living. If one has good credit history, he can easily avail himself of the unsecured loan.

Buying Kitchen Granite Counter Tops

Buying Kitchen Granite Counter Tops

Granite is an excellent choice when it comes to choosing the right surface material for the counter tops in your kitchen remodeling project. Nothing surpasses the elegance, functionality, beauty and durability that granite has to offer, not anywhere in the market for kitchen counter top materials. However, you should be informed properly about the highs and lows of using granite as a kitchen counter top surface material before you rush out to make a purchase.

Maintaining your Granite Kitchen Counter Top: Granite is the most durable, and the least porous of all the natural stone available for kitchen counter top use. However, granite still has the capability of absorbing liquids, which means that it can stain if it is not sealed properly and often. It is generally recommended by providers of granite kitchen counter top material for home owners to wipe the granite down with a sealer at least once every year. Make sure that you talk about maintenance requirements before purchasing any specific kitchen granite counter top.

Purchasing your Kitchen Granite Counter Top: Kitchen granite counter top prices are definitely far from inexpensive, but considering quality that you are purchasing, it may be worth stretching your budget a bit. Kitchen granite counter tops are generally affordable for most people, at approximately $80 to $120 for each square foot. This number is meant to include both the cost of the granite, and the labor costs to install the counter top.

Choosing a Color: Kitchen granite counter tops are available in a wide array of colors, because the granite can be found all over the world. Dark colors tend to mask the presence of crumbs or puddles of liquid, which may appear to be a positive property, but may actually trick you into laying food on what, may not actually be a counter top that is clean. Lighter colors are generally preferable, as they make stains and spills apparent so that they can be cleaned up before they damage the counter top by staining the granite.

Warranties for Kitchen Granite Counter Tops: Granite counter tops are generally guaranteed by reputable kitchen granite counter top manufacturers for an extended period, which is as long as 25 years in some cases. Be sure to ask about warranties with the manufacturer, as it will help you to determine the actual quality of the granite you have set your eye on.

Losing Sleep Over A Leaking Roof? Unleash The 21st Century Roofing Technology, And Problem Solved!

Losing Sleep Over A Leaking Roof? Unleash The 21st Century Roofing Technology, And Problem Solved!

Without any doubt, roofing can be considered a somewhat dry conversation topic, until the actual roof in our own home starts leaking. After all, you and I come home where the roof sits on four walls sheltering our home from the cold and the rain, but it just so happens that this, perhaps, the most critical component in our house is the last thing on our minds. We all have a little tendency to take things for granted, and as such we have come to expect our roof to perform day and night, year after year without giving it any actual thought. We want it to be cheap, we want it to perform flawlessly, and we want to never have to think about it.

Unfortunately, and all too often, our good old cheap asphalt roofs fails on us when we least expect it! And we used to think that,it could never happen to us... I have been in those shoes myself!

Let's face it, a roof that is leaking is not a kind or problem that can be ignored. A leaky roof could cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to your home, and the sooner you take care of your roofing problem, the better off you will be. I know this is not the most exciting moment of your life, but you will have to make some decisions as to what roofing product you will choose for your house. There are many different roofing options available, and I am going to suggest that asphalt roof is not the option you will want to pick, because they are becoming obsolete. Yes, I said obsolete!

Like it or not, but we live in the 21st century and it seems as though the good old cheap asphalt roof no longer cuts it. Unless, of course, you plan to sell your house in a few years and move out so that the new owner will get stock with the inferior roof. It is estimated that an average lifespan of an asphalt shingle roof is only 17 years. Add a few years in a good climate, and subtract a few years for northern climate. This is not a very lucrative option to know that your roof is bound to fail and you will have to spend your money again shopping for a new roof. So what is the solution you will ask...

In the last decade, there has been a quite sizeable increase in the popularity of metal roofing installations, and I am not talking about the old barn style naked roof that makes the rain drops sound like a machine gun rattle. No, that is not the case, and in fact, modern metal roofing choices have become very sophisticated. They come in a variety of colors from white snow to vermont slate blue, and shapes that will blow your mind. For example, there are metal roofs that look just like wooden shake with unique texture and coloring. If you like the look of slate roofing, than you can get a metal roof that looks like slates.

Whatever your style and color preferences are, metal roofing seems to provide a solution to satisfy those unique needs and desires, from red spanish tile to golden aluminum shake. But, here is the best part, unlike asphalt roofing that is bound to fail soon, quality metal roofing installations are known to last as long as 100 years. As for the material manufacturer warranty, many modern metal roofing products come with up to 50 years non-prorated warranty.

And by the way, metal roofing can save as much as 25% on the air-conditioning costs. If you choose a white colored, sun reflective metal roof, than your energy savings could be as high as 50%. And did I mention, there is also a tax credit available from the government if buy a metal roof.

A Closet System Is For More Than A Bedroom

A Closet System Is For More Than A Bedroom

Creating a good closet system to make storage neat and organized can be a rewarding undertaking that results not only in a space looking better, but also functioning better. A good system for storage isn't just for clothes closets, however. The truth is a good system can make almost any closet function better.

The kitchen pantry, for example, is one closet in most homes that could most certainly benefit from a system. When well designed, a closet system can make working in the kitchen an absolute delight. They can also take the guesswork out of creating a shopping day inventory. Let's look at how.

When a good closet system is brought into play in a pantry, for example, everything within it will have a standard and organized place to go. Rather than have pots and pans stacked up in no discernable order while spices and canned goods get crammed in, a system can make it easy for anyone to find things when they need them and even enable anyone in the household to understand exactly where things should be placed when they're put up.

A good closet system for a pantry will require a little planning to decide what types of things should be placed in this area. If it's simply a food panty, a system might include such things as drawers for spices and sauce mixes and specialized rotating devices for canned goods and so on. The key in creating a good pantry system is making sure that everything in the pantry can be seen and inventoried quickly. This will, of course, require some careful planning, but when you avoid buying a tenth box of rice on shopping day because you thought you were out, you'll thank yourself.

If a closet system for a combination pantry is required, the design will be a little different. The upper level, for example, can include hangers for pots and utensils while a thin, but long space might be designed for pans and cookie sheets. A spice rack, drawer or even lazy Susan might work well for keeping these items organized and at the ready. The key in this design is the same - you want to be certain you can readily spot items when you need to.

A good closet system can take a pantry that's a real bear to deal with and turn it into a functional and attractive area of the home. By making things easy to spot, a closet system will save you time, aggravation and trouble. Plus, if you have a good closet system, you won't go out buying foodstuffs you already have, but can't find!

The Benefits Of An Electric Heater

The Benefits Of An Electric Heater

In an effort to maintain a consistent and comfortable temperature in our homes, we often compare and contrast the heating abilities of the electric heater as opposed to those heaters powered by gas or oil. Understanding how the electric heater works to regulate the temperature of our homes – and the price we pay for that privilege – can help you begin to differentiate between the many heating varieties.

An electric heater is by far the most popular heating source used by private homeowners as well as office and retail space, government buildings, and schools. The electric heater, while more expensive then its counterparts, is a cleaner burn than gas or oil and is conveniently operated. Further, an electric heater requires little space and distributes heat equitably.

With an electric heater, heat is distributed through an interplay of coils set into the walls. When we adjust the temperature in our homes through the thermostat, a signal is sent to the electric coils which begin to heat accordingly. In an effort to increase the efficiency of the electric heater, many newly built homes are adding radiant heat into their flooring – a layer of electric coils that sit on top of the house foundation and are covered by the floor. Radiant heat can substantially increase the efficiency of the electric heater.

For those who do not have a central electric heater for the entire house, the portable electric heater – or space heater – can significantly warm a room. While this style of electric heater can pose risk of fire, most often if they are used responsibly and according to operation instructions, they can be a wonderful alternative to central heat. If you choose to install an electric heater down the road, be sure to have a licensed, reputable professional perform the installation.

Of course the use of the electric heater comes with conservation responsibility. Do your part to conserve electricity by setting your heat to a moderate temperature and by turning the heat down when you leave the house.

Showers - Available Types

Showers - Available Types

Manual Mixer Showers:

Mixer showers are essentially valves which mix hot water and cold water to obtain a suitable mixed temperature. This mixed temperature is achieved using a manual control of some form. Mixer showers have a hot water inlet and a cold water inlet. They do not heat the water directly. Depending upon the temperature decided by the user (using a lever or knob), the mixer valve will blend the necessary amounts of hot and cold water to achieve the desired mixed temperature.

Advantage

Manual mixer showers are available as part of wall mounted units, meaning the physical height of the temperature adjustment is convenient for everyday use, and the spray may be mounted in a shower cubicle or over a bath.

Disadvantage

This type of shower is more expensive than some of the other solutions and requires hot and cold water feeds. This may prove expensive if the shower is to be installed in part of the bathroom which does not already have water supplies.

Push-on Mixer Shower:

The push on mixer shower is essentially a hose complete with a spray head. It could be likened to a large and clumsy stethoscope. The hose has rubber or threaded feet and can be connected to taps as and when required. The water temperature is manually altered using the taps, which may belong to a sink or bath. This approach is cheap, but the hose is not normally very long and hence cannot be wall mounted. This means one hand is used to hold the spray above the head and the other is used to wash. This can prove inconvenient, but a cheap and satisfactory temporary solution nonetheless.

Bath Mixer Shower:

With this type of shower, the hose and spray parts have an integrated mixer with tap(s). The tap(s) and shower flex are all one unit and whether the shower is used or the taps are used can be decided manually using a lever. The spray head may be screwed on and off the flex.

Advantage

A bath mixer tap is a good choice because it is cheap, more presentable than a temporary rubber hose, generally more robust and attractive than it's temporary counterpart, and no extra plumbing is involved.

Disadvantage

Temperature control is very basic and this can prove inconvenient. Turning the tap a "micro turn" can dramatically increase or decrease the temperature, as can flushing a toilet sharing the same cold water feed. Trying to mount the shower head at high level will provide a very poor flow rate in most cases.

Thermostatic Mixer:

The hose and spray of the shower are parts of a wall unit and the hot and cold water supplies are connected to a single valve. It is complete with a built in stabilizer to automatically adjust the water temperature, thus preventing it from becoming too hot. They are effectively a manual mixer shower with an in-built thermostatic mixing valve, suitable for all installations. They are most often installed in hospitals, schools and other facilities open to the public or individuals who would otherwise be at high risk of scalding.

If a thermostatic mixer shower is being installed, then hot and cold water supplies can be taken from the same supplies as other appliances/outlets. Although reductions in pressure may occur when water is drawn off elsewhere, the in-built thermostatic mixing valve controls the temperature.

Advantage

The controlled temperature makes them extremely convenient. The automatic adjustment means that the flow temperature is not affected by the use of water elsewhere on the premises.

Disadvantage

The disadvantage is cost. They are the most expensive of the mixer showers, but as already discussed, in some cases safety is paramount.

Power Showers:

Power showers are single units that contain an electric pump. They are capable of altering both water pressure and water temperature. This type of shower can be fitted provided a supply from a cold water tank and a static hot water source (e.g. A cylinder) are available.

Advantage

They are convenient to use, because they are capable of altering both pressure and temperature, and for those who prefer to feel the water lashing down with force, the in-built pump will make this type of shower a pleasure to use.

Disadvantage

This type of shower is not suitable for installations where it is intended for the water to be heated directly by the shower itself, or where water may only be supplied under above-normal pressures. Pressurized supplies include most pumped sources such as the mains or a combination boiler.

Due to the pressure the flow rate will increase. The drainage system may need to be re-considered. The higher flow rate means the shower tray or bath will fill up quicker and if there is no means of removing the waste water at the same rate at which it is supplied, then this type of shower will prove impractical.

Taps - Disk Vs Spindle

Taps - Disk Vs Spindle

Traditional Spindle

Traditional spindle taps are still the most commonly used type of tap, simply due to the amount of time that they were the only type available. They operate by turning the tap head to achieve the desired flow rate.

Without getting too technical, the tap has a spindle through its core and a valve seat attached to the bottom of the spindle. A standard tap washer, usually made of rubber, is fixed to the end of the valve seat. As the handle is turned the spindle rotates and the screw thread moves the valve seat up and down to adjust the flow of water. The valve seat is positioned over the hole through which water flows. The valve seat will rise up and down as the spindle is turned, allowing proportional control of the flow of water. The traditional spindle approach is cheaper than the ceramic disk alternative, but is of an inferior quality.

Whilst durable, tap washers do need to be changed from time to time. This can be an awkward task and a dripping tap can prove seriously annoying, not to mention uneconomical. The appearance is limited by the spindle approach and the modern lever handles are not available using a traditional spindle tap. Ultimately, some form of repetitive turning is required to open and close the tap.

Traditional spindle taps are suitable for high or low-pressure systems. This gives them an advantage over ceramic disk taps.

Ceramic Disk

On the other hand, ceramic disk operated taps are drip free. Changing washers is a thing of the past. The reason for this is the entirely different mode of operation. Ceramic disks get their name from the fact that there are two ceramic disks within the tap body, which when the lever is turned or lifted, the disks are separated allowing water to flow. Only a quarter turn is required to take the flow rate from full on to off if the turn handle approach is used. Ceramic disk taps can look like traditional spindle taps, but inside the tap body the mode of operation is different. Whilst these taps are lower maintenance, last longer and function better, they are more costly, as is normally the case.

Ceramic disk taps are inferior as regards flow rates. They will not work successfully with very low pressures, whereas the traditional spindle type will.

Quick Notes On Pressure:

If you have a combination boiler or an un-vented hot water system (electric point of use water heater) you don't need to worry about pressure. If, however you have a traditional gravity pressure system i.e. a water tank in the attic and a hot water cylinder for domestic hot water generation, then you should make a note of your available pressure. If you have a very low available pressure and purchase ceramic disk type taps, they may not work as desired. Keep this in mind when choosing. If you do have the older, more traditional tank and cylinder system, consult a plumber or plumbers merchant to find out whether a pump is available to provide the needed pressure.

How Much Energy Does Your Home Use - Or Waste?

How Much Energy Does Your Home Use - Or Waste?

Do you know how much heating and cooling energy your house is wasting? Would you like to know how to improve your home's energy efficiency and how much the improvements will save you on your energy bills?

You need a professional home energy audit!

What Happens During A Home Energy Audit?

A professional auditor is going to perform a thorough examination of your home - room-by-room, inside and out. He or she will be noting things like the number of windows, the surface area of the walls, and more.

The auditor will also be examining the usage patterns of your home and several months worth of your energy bills. There may be consistent times when your home is unoccupied, and reducing the use of the heating and cooling system during those hours can reduce your costs without any effect on your overall comfort.

The auditor will check the house for leaks where drafts can let cold air in or out. This is done by lowering the pressure in the home and using smoke to pinpoint leaks. To perform this test (called a blower door test), the auditor will close all of the windows and doors and then install a large fan in one of the outside door frames. The fan draws air out of the house lowering the inside air pressure.

An assistant will walk around the outside of the home with a smoker and the auditor will note areas where smoke can be seen come into the house. These will be the areas where a little sealing and caulking will stop the problem.

Finally, your auditor should perform a thermographic scan. This will show warm and cool spots in your walls and identify places where insulation may help.

Finding A Home Energy Auditor

Your state or local government energy or weatherization office may be able to help you locate a local company that performs audits. Your energy utility companies may perform residential energy audits or be able to recommend local auditors.

When deciding who to hire, look for the following:

* References. The auditor should be able to provide these and you should call each one and ask about their satisfaction level.

* Check your local Better Business Bureau regarding the auditor you want to use. Look for complaints about the company.

* Make sure the auditor can perform a thermographic test and that he or she uses a calibrated blower fan for their tests.

Knowing where the energy leaks are in your home may save you hundreds of dollars spent guessing where the problems are and fixing things that weren't actually broken. Plus, you will also benefit from an ongoing savings on your energy bills.

Pattern Imprinted Concrete Decorative Driveways

Pattern Imprinted Concrete Decorative Driveways

First impressions last, and we always want to make sure that the first impression is a good one, right? Like so with our homes – we want the people who drop by to visit has a favorable impression of our homes. Imagine your boss visiting your humble abode for the first time. He parks his car in your driveway, opens the door, and the first thing he sees is the concrete of your driveway. Now what do you think would be his reaction? Would he be shaking his head invisibly? Shaking his head visibly? Or admiring the artistry that went to its creation?

Elite Driveways make sure your boss will be admiring your driveway – and more than make him admire, make him a tad envious too. Some of their oft-favored patterns include Ashler slates, Grand Ashler, Herringbone slate, London cobble, and Old English cobble. Examples of favorite colors are brick red, champagne, deep red, deep tan, lawn green, mahogany, purbeck stone, steadman buff, terracotta, and Tudor brown. With creative genius and an array of different patterns and colors, special effects can be created – you can also craft individual creations.

Elite Driveways use only the highest quality materials and tried and tested construction methods – a successful combination that ensures the customers are receiving the best service and the best product. The company makes sure that their materials conform to the British standards – their concrete formulation contains fiber mesh reinforcement. Once sealed, Elite concrete becomes 25% harder than standard concrete.

Concrete had been long used for driveways and road surfaces, and it was only during the 50s that styling techniques have been developed. At first, these were merely shadows of individual pavers – later on, these pattern imprinted concretes became entities in their own right.

Pattern imprinted concretes are formed by stamping moulds and adding colors into the unformed concrete. The system amalgamates acrylic sealers, color surface hardeners, and release agents with three-dimensional texturing tools. Voila! Another unique design created. It is not surprising – what with the endless scope of design and the patent superiority – that Elite Driveways recommend pattern imprinted concrete over a simple block paving.

How To Keep Your Shower From Leaking And Preventive Maintenance

How To Keep Your Shower From Leaking And Preventive Maintenance

New installations:

1. Make sure there are no holes in your shower pan. Have your contractor keep a piece of drywall in the pan during construction. This will protect it from nails and screws that happen to fall on the pan.

2. Make sure any debris does not block the weep holes at the bottom of the drain.

3. Your installer should not have any low areas in the cement work. This slopped cement is the foundation for the tile or marble and should slope from the wall to the drain in a strait line with no depressions.

4. As was stated in part 1 of this article, the finished shower floor should be installed before the finished walls.

5. Have your installer seal the tile grout joints You should keep them sealed with a penetrating sealer (every 6 months or so) this is very easy to do and will only take 5 to 10 minutes. This will keep the grout joints water tight and easier to keep clean

In the case of a marble shower floor it is even more important to keep the entire surface sealed. Just remember to make sure the stone is thoroughly dry before applying the sealer.

6. The tile needs to be cut tight to the drain so no leaks can occur.

7. Walls can crack in the corners even though they have been taped with fiberglass tape. A better system I have found is to reverse a vinyl corner bead and screw it to the inside corners. This makes it very hard for the walls to separate if they crack from expansion and contraction due to temperature changes or the house settling.

Existing shower floors:

1. Keep the tile grout joints or in the case of stone, sealed with penetrating sealer. If a crack appears where the marble or tile floor meets the walls do not use caulking to fill the crack. This eventually separates and water runs behind it.

2. If your shower floor is leaking sometimes you can save it if the walls and floor are not deteriorated and still solid. The first thing to do is check that the diverter is not causing the leak.If that is ok then place a fan in the shower or a small heater, dry it out and then regrout and seal joints.

Get Style and Strength in Your Hurricane Shutters

Get Style and Strength in Your Hurricane Shutters

Hurricanes are becoming more and more prevalent and powerful, and with all the destruction that has taken place in the past, insurance companies are starting to refuse insurance to people who live in the areas that most need that insurance.

The only solution is to protect your home as best you can yourself.

Hurricane-Proof Windows

If you live in an area that is frequently hit by hurricanes or windstorms, it is probably the law that you have hurricane-proof windows. However, even these (windows with plastic panes, shatter-proof glass or glass with protective membranes) can use all the help they can get. In a hurricane the strength of your windows is the difference between your house surviving with minimum damage, or with a missing roof. If a window breaks because of battering by strong winds, those winds rush into the house like a freight train, air pressure inside the building increases, and that's what helps cause the roof to be ripped off.

So don't be stingy. Get the best hurricane shutters you can.

As with any other household item on the market, there are quite a lot of choices to choose from. You can purchase removable shutters - but shutters are heavy and you will have to have the strength to remove them and a safe place to store them. Other shutters are affixed permanently to the house. Even though these shutters are a necessity, there is no reason why they cannot also look attractive until they have to be put to use.

Save time and money by surfing around the internet and comparing prices and features. Then visit your local home improvement and home decor stores and discussing your needs with the people there, so you can make an informed decision.

Hurricane Depot carries hurricane storm panels for your windows, but also braces for your garage door. Don't neglect that important part of your home, by the way!

Storm Shutters is another online company that carries hurricane shutters, as well as other kinds of storm shutters for those of you who live in areas subject to tornadoes or violent windstorms.

Aluminum or steel too heavy? A company called Wayne Dalton provides Fabric-Shield storm panels! There are PVC coated woven fabric panels - tested to block rain, wind, and storm-driven projectiles.

1. Hurricane Storm Panels

These panels are the most inexpensive system you can purchase. The panels are made of aluminum or steel, and are removable for easy storage. (If you are going to store them, however, make sure that you are strong enough to put them back on their tracks should you need to. And make sure that all the hardware you need to replace the panels, stays with them.)

2. Roll Down Hurricane Shutter

Roll down shutters are attached to the top of your window, and are lowered through the use of an electric motor. Should your power go out, they can also be lowered by the use of a hand crank. These shutters will protect you not only from a hurricanes, but from home intruders as well. However, because they are automatic, they are expensive.

3. Accordion-Type Hurricane Shutter

Accordion shutters, which as the name implies fold and unfold like an accordion, are also relatively inexpensive, but there are maintenance issues you need to be aware of. It is very important that the glide wheels on which they roll be well-maintained, and the last thing you want to do is find out that you can't shut them when you really, really need to.

These types of shutters are used to enclose your entire porch or veranda, and would not be used for single windows.

4. Bahama-style Hurricane Shutter

The Bahama-style shutter is actually an awning. It's a single-piece shutter attached above the window. It only opens a little way, which allows in the air but not a lot of sunlight. (Which can be a good thing if you want to protect your furniture and paintings from fading.). During a storm you lower the shutter completely and lock it down.

5. Colonial Hurricane Shutter

Colonial hurricane shutters always come in pairs. These are the most decorative of shutters, made of aluminum or steel. (Don't buy any that use styrofoam filler or sheet metal parts. These would be too weak to stand up to a real storm..

Why Sealcoating Is Important To Your Asphalt

Why Sealcoating Is Important To Your Asphalt

Your driveway or parking lot is a significant investment in your property. To beautify you establishment and protect your investment as long as possible, you want to protect your asphalt from the damaging effects of certain natural elements including moisture and ultraviolet oxidation. Natural and man-made elements can cause cracks half way into the asphalt, little as 5 years. Small cracks act as miniature storm drains after a good rain and cause raveling between the asphalt over time. Larger cracks and potholes can appear within the base as early as 8-10 years unless certain precautions are taken. Protecting asphalt with sealcoating basically has the same benefits as sun block has to protect your skin, or varnish on wood.

What causes asphalt to break down? Standard asphalt is very susceptible to naturaland man made elements such as sun, wind, rain, snow, frost and ice. These elements cause oxidation to the pavement, drying out the asphalt. Man made elements such as fuel, oil, antifreeze, and salts break down the oils and cohesive properties in the asphalt.

As new asphalt age’s small open cracks are formed between the asphalt, from oxidation and rain. These small cracks permit water, salt, fuel, oil, and ultraviolet rays to penetrate into the base leading to greater damage, unless repaired properly. Water is said to be the most damaging agent to asphalt. This leads to larger cracks, eventually collapsing into the eroded voids, causing potholes. Alligator cracks and potholes should be cut with a saw, and replace before sealing asphalt.

What are the benefits of sealcoating? Sealcoating protects your investment, extending the life of your asphalt, saving you money in the long run. Asphalt sealer beautifies and enhances your driveway or parking lot, giving it a dark black color to the pavement making it look and wear like new. A dark black parking lot offers a positive image of how clean a company, or residential home is.

-Asphalt Sealer slows down oxidation and water penetration, blocking out natural elements such as, sun, wind, rain, snow, frost, and ice.

-Asphalt sealer resist harmful man made element spills such as fuel, antifreeze, oil, and salt. Find a sealer that is made from a coal tar emulsion that isn’t soluble in oil or gas.

-Asphalt sealer fills small voids in asphalt reducing exposure to oxygen and water and extending pavement life.

How often should you sealcoat Asphalt? You should sealcoat your new asphalt as soon as it begins to turn grey or 90 days after installation. If you have already sealcoated your asphalt in the past, it is recommended to re-apply sealer every 3 to 4 years depending on the wear of the previous applications. If you sealcoat too much voids will be created in the sealer causing cracking later on. You need to let the old sealer wear off before applying new sealer. Talk to your local contractor before making any serious decisions.

Get the Best Countertops

Today, countertops are no longer considered extravagant and exclusive only used by the rich and famous to showcase their wealth and aesthetic tastes but even normal middle class people can afford them. People usually want to decorate their kitchen and bathroom tops to match the color, theme and environment of their residences. But there are so many options available in the market that more often than not homeowners get confused while choosing the best counters that suit their demand. So how do you choose the most suitable countertop to make your kitchen or bathroom look more glamorous?

Things to consider before choosing:

We use countertops almost all the time - while assembling our meals, using the toilet and hence they get a lot of beating. So, the most important thing one should consider while choosing is the durability and resistance power of the material that has perfect edges. The material should have smooth surface, be easy to clean, resistant to stain, scratches chemical, heat and water.

One should also look at the material and how it is manufactured. Some counters need simple processing and some require lengthy processing. Naturally, the one with simple processing will take less impact and remain strong during customization.

Installation is another important aspect while choosing the perfect countertop for you home. While most of the materials can be customized and installed, one should still consider which material is best suitable for which part of the house.

You must choose a renowned company that has the best qualified crew and good track record of customer service not to mention good bargaining offers.

Most importantly you want choose a unique surface that will set you apart from your peers and make them envy of your prized possessions.

So which Material?

Countertop materials can be divided into two broad groups and almost all have their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Natural Stones Used for Countertops:

Granite:

Granite is one of the hardest materials available and extremely scratch, water, heat and stain resistant. But what makes this natural stone apart from other counter tops is its immense aesthetic appeal that is unparalleled. Found in various colors and shades, granites greatly increase the charm of your kitchen. Granites are serviceable if the need arise. Granite is expensive upfront, but it is well worth to have a piece of the world’s history, and to have a one of a kind look. Granite comes with many type of finishes, honed, polished, flamed, brushed, and many more.

Marble:

Marble is also very beautiful material like granite for countertops but it is not as chemical resistant as granite. Hence, polished marble countertops are prone to etch marks that may resemble water marks. You can have different marble finishes according to your choice and taste- honed, polished, tumbled, brushed etc.

Man-made Surface:

It is a solid plastic material that is resistant to stains, and liquids. It can be found in various designs and colors and matt or a low gloss finishes. But it is very expensive, easily get scratched, low heat resistant and over all not eco friendly. As it is not a natural material, the aesthetic value is not that appealing too. Man-made materials look like they came off an assembler belt, and give a look of run of the mill type with no individuality, no personal touch, no real way for you to make it difference from others.

Formica:

This artificially made laminate (plastic and wood) has many good properties of a countertop. Formica is relatively durable, easy to clean, stain resistant, has good finishes and over all inexpensive. But as it is man made, most find it aesthetically boring although it tries to simulate the colors of natural stones. It is very common and used by those who do not have a taste for beauty.

Wood:

Many people use wood countertops which are repairable, fairly attractive and durable if taken good care. But their resistance against heat, water and scratch is very low and there is little scope with wood countertops in terms of color or design. They are also less durable and a lot of labor is needed to care them properly.

Ceramic Tiles:

Ceramic tiles are quite popular with many home owners due to their durability, reasonable price, resistance qualities and wide range of color and designs. These tiles are made by joining tiles with grouts and they are repairable too. They are renowned for being resistant to scratch, stain, water, heat and bacteria. But they have one major drawback- they must be cleaned regularly which is tiresome. Ceramic tiles may also get cracked.

So what do you choose?

The man made materials look too common- without any aesthetic value and sometimes sore to the eyes. They also create great environmental hazards and are not serviceable or recyclable. Once they get damaged, you must condemn them like a one time pen. On the other, although natural stones are a bit more expensive – what they give you is value for your money. It is not an unnecessary expenditure but an investment in beauty and in future. The aesthetic value of a natural stone countertop sets it apart from other. Moreover, it is very much serviceable and over time if it looses a bit of shine or glossiness, it can be easily and completely restored to her glamorous self.

Planting Fall Perennials for Spring Color

Planting Fall Perennials for Spring Color

Many gardeners think of fall as the time for limited blooming and the time when the excitement of new blooms each day with varied colors textures and shapes appearing from the flowing plants has lessened. At the same time, flower colors tend to move toward the yellow, orange, red end of the spectrum

In order to have fall blooming plants in your gardens, choose flowers which appeal to your sense of color and design, will work well in your planting zone, and require a longer period before blooming. One other factor is important to remember for these autumn season perennials. These plants put the energy into stems, leaves and root systems during the time when other colorful flowers are blooming. Without the cushion of earlier blooming flowers in front of and around the fall-bloomers, the latter can become overly tall and rangy. They may require pruning if they become too unsightly.

Pruning, deadheading, staking, dividing and pest control are all practices which must be practiced religiously in order to have best appearance of your perennial flower beds. Perennial flowers cannot be ‘set and forget’ any more than annuals. A favorite fall blooming flower for many is the aster frikartii. Its clusters of 2 ½ inch single blooms come in lavender darkening to violet blue with yellow centers.

Another way to get color and drama into your fall garden is to look at planting decorative grasses. Some varieties are elegantly quiet during spring and summer months, but blaze into glory when the colder nights of autumn arrive. Examples of grasses to look at are the favorite Pampas Grass. This grass can grow up to ten feet in the air, with late summer or fall blooms of white or pinkish plumes. Eulalia grass (Miscanthus sinensis) grows 5 to 6 feet tall. Its tan seed heads provide the sound of rustling in the air movement.

The best time for gardens is the fall season according to some garden enthusiasts, If you are too busy in the spring and gone or involved in other activities in the summer, it’s only during the autumn season that you can enjoy your garden to its fullest.

Your Soundproofing Solution

Your Soundproofing Solution

Soundproofing a wall or a ceiling is one of the most challenging construction applications in the world today. To help you with these applications, Acoustical Solutions introduces Green Glue. Green Glue is a liquid sound damping compound used between layers of drywall or other building materials.

Moving to a new home, installing a home theater, having a new baby, getting new neighbors, or just growing weary of the everyday noise are all reasons that cause people to want to consider soundproofing. Another common soundproofing complaint is footstep noise from rooms above. “I can hear my neighbors walking and sliding their chairs.” In a world where hard surfaced floors are increasingly popular, this problem is becoming increasingly important, and quality strategies and solutions are needed.

Acoustical Solutions, Inc. of Richmond, Virginia, who has been offering sound barriers, sound absorption and sound isolation products for twenty years, is now proud to introduce Green Glue. Green Glue is a liquid, waterborne, sound damping compound, which represents the highest performance product of its type. It is used in between sheets of drywall, subflooring or other building materials. It is significantly lower in applied cost than competitive products, with an excellent cost/performance ratio. It is also remarkably tolerant to real-world application conditions and carries almost none of the burden of precision required by many soundproofing systems.

The best application for green glue is between sheets of drywall, OSB or Plywood over the main part of a wall, floor or other structure. Green Glue will not be effective as a paint or coating. Green Glue is non-toxic with no mixing required. For walls, floors and ceilings, this product drastically reduces impact and airborne noise. It can also be used in commercial environments, new construction or remodeling of an existing space as well as home theaters, and recording studios.

Sound damping is a very straightforward concept. Simply put, sound damping is the rate at which something dissipates energy. In a constrained layer damping system, sometimes referred to as CLD, a damping material is sandwiched between two other (usually stiff/rigid) materials. For example, Green Glue sandwiched between two layers of drywall. Sound damping occurs when the viscoelastic center of the "sandwich" is sheared. The shearing pulls and stretches on the sound damping material. Under these conditions, the unique polymeric construction of Green Glue very efficiently converts this mechanical energy to heat. The vibration energy is not isolated; it's dissipated and removed.

Green Glue comes in 29 oz. tubes. You can use any quart size caulk gun, available at most hardware and building material stores. It is very fast and easy to apply. No special skills whatsoever are required. Recommended application is two tubes of Green Glue per 4' x 8' area or two tubes per standard sheet of drywall. If you are not on a budget, utilizing three tubes per sheet will improve performance. Each case of Green Glue covers about 192 square feet, or 128 square feet if used at the three tubes coverage rate. Do not use more than three tubes per 4' x 8' sheet, as performance will actually decline above three tubes per sheet.

Protecting Your Lawn the Organic Way

Protecting Your Lawn the Organic Way

Many lawn owners like to use chemical pesticides and herbicides to control the pest and weed growth in their lawn. However, these chemicals are harmful to the environment if they are not used in the proper way. They may also kill insects that are actually helpful to the lawn. Runoff from these chemicals may find their way into the nearby water supply.

The two main categories of lawn issues that you need to deal with on a regular basis are weeds and pests. Before you can properly implement any form of control, you need to identify the type of weeds and pests that your lawn has. Once you identify them correctly, you can look for an organic solution to control these weeds and pests.

Weeds are broadly categorized as broadleaf or narrowleaf. They are further divided into perennial weeds and annual weeds. The perennial weeds are harder to control as they live from year to year and produce seeds that help the weeds spread. The annual weeds grow for one season, produce seeds and then die off. This cycle repeat again the following year.

If you are unsure of what weeds you have in your lawn, you can take some samples to your county extension or nursery and they will help you identify them.

Once you have them identified, you can formulate a plan to bring them under control without the use of chemical herbicides. The simplest method is to use your hands and pull out the weeds together with their roots.

However, the best way to control weeds is to focus on building a healthier lawn. Check that you are mowing at the right height and ensure that your lawn is getting the right amount of nutrients and water. Too much or too little nutrients and water will weaken your lawn and allow the weeds to prosper.

Pest is another problem that you will face constantly and you can also control them using organic methods. Some of the common pests you will face include armyworms, cutworms, billbugs and Japanese beetles.

You can control these pests the natural way. Many organic pest control products use natural ingredients such as citrus oils, garlic and hot peppers. Some product use lemon as its base and they are quite effective in killing various pests without harming your lawn.

You can try to use a spray that use sesame oil, clove oil and thyme oil as base for repelling insects like grasshoppers and ants. Another type of spray use black peppers and garlic for its base and can be safely used on lawns and gardens. This type of spray will help control mosquitoes, gnats, fleas, and ticks.

You can also use insecticidal soaps to kill most of the soft-bodied pests like chinch bugs and sod webworms. This type of insecticidal soap work fast, breakdown quickly and are harmless to humans. You have to mix the insecticidal soap with water and apply them to your lawn.

By the way, if you discover a particular type of insect is constantly giving you problems, you may want to consider planting another type of grass that is resistant to that type of insect.

Regardless of what type of pesticides or herbicides you are using, you must use it safely. Pesticides that are non-toxic to your lawn may be harmful to human beings. Always read the product labels when using such products. You should always opt for those products with natural ingredients as its base if you have the choice.

A healthy vigorous lawn has fewer problems and it should be your primary focus for all your maintenance efforts. Proper aeration, watering, fertilizing and mowing will help your lawn grow healthily and make it non-conducive for weeds and pest to thrive.

Outdoor Lighting: Beauty, Security, Safety

Outdoor Lighting: Beauty, Security, Safety

Add dimension to your home with professionally designed landscape lighting. Nothing is more majestic than seeing your home illuminated at night. As light gently washes the walls, accents architectural features and illuminates the trees, your home will take on a new dimension and announce its presence in the night. Outdoor lighting has become extremely popular as homeowners have discovered that it adds beauty, security and safety to their property.

Beauty:

Outdoor lighting, when designed properly, will add dimension to a home that once was unnoticeable after dusk. Lighting designers will use different types of light to achieve various tasks. If illuminating an entire surface of a home is the desired effect, then a flood type light would be used to wash the wall. Maybe there is a row of columns, where it would be dramatic if each one were lighted individually. A lighting designer would use a beam of light that has a narrow light pattern, spotlighting each individual column. A majestic tree in landscape might call for soft lighting, illuminating the branches and highlighting one of nature’s original pieces of art. As all of these lighting types are used in one design and begin to harmonize with one another, a very special effect will be created. Outdoor lighting can produce an effect so endearing that you will find yourself eagerly awaiting and appreciating the approach to your home like never before.

Security:

Another added benefit of outdoor lighting is the security that it can help provide. Many homeowners will have a security system installed in their home, but what they don’t realize is that a properly lighted home will not be as likely targeted for theft as a home that sits completely in the dark. A criminal will not be as likely to enter a door or window where he has to do his work in a brightly lighted area. Effectively planned lighting, in concert with your home security system, can help to keep your home and family safe.

Safety:

All of us love to use our outdoors, but unless you have proper illumination at night, it can be difficult to navigate around your property. There are many types of lighting that an outdoor lighting company can install to make the grounds around your home more accessible at night. If you have a retaining wall along your driveway, lights can be installed to illuminate your path to the garage. If you have difficult steps leading up to your home in the front or back, then lighting can be used in the riser portion of the step to define each step. Lighting can also define a walkway connecting the house and the garage. This type of safety lighting is very useful for the elderly as well. While these are just a few examples of how outdoor lighting can add safety to your property, an expert lighting designer can help you to identify your problem areas and incorporate them into their overall design.

After the successful installation of an outdoor lighting project and the night falls for the first time to reveal the results, you will find that you have made a decision that means your money has been well spent. Also know that for energy efficiency, outdoor illumination can be placed on a timer that turns it off at dawn and on at dusk. Outdoor lighting adds beauty, value, security and safety to your property while letting your home be a glowing star in the night sky.

Home Improvement New Solar Technology

Home Improvement New Solar Technology

Solar Advancement

While everyone agrees solar energy is a clean, cost-effective energy source, there has always been one problem. The solar panel systems tended to be large and rather bulky. Frankly, they don’t add to the beauty of a home. While solar panel designs have improved over the years, a new development involving shingles is getting a lot of attention.

Photovoltaic shingles are a major design breakthrough for those who have a distaste for large solar panel systems. These shingles are, well, shingles. The replace the shingles on a roof, but have the physical appearance of a regular roof. Although they are black, they do not standout from the roof in the manner of panels. Instead, the they simply look like a regular roof and many people cannot tell the difference. Obviously, this seamless design is much better than the bulky designs of panel systems.

The technological breakthrough that makes this new technology possible is the invention of thin film photovoltaic cells. Known as “amorphous silicon thin alloy technology”, the designers essentially stepped back from traditional solar panel designs and did some thinking. What they realized is the materials used in panels were not the only ones that could be used. Without getting overly technical, the design team came up with a solution where more efficient cells could be built on a steel substrate. Each super thin cell was tailored to capture different spectrums of the sunlight. When layered on top of each other, they became extremely efficient at producing power.

The ultimate result is a system that can sit directly on the roof of a home or building, is more efficient than regular solar panels and far more appealing from a visual perspective. If you’re excuse for not using solar in the past was the bulky system, you need to rethink solar.

Will this new technology become the breakthrough we have been waiting for in solar power? It already is if you consider just the following:

1. The United States Army is building a solar powered community using it.

2. Museums in Beijing, China are converting to it.

3. Habitat for Humanity is using the system on many of the homes it builds.

4. Lockheed Martin is experimenting with the technology as a power source for high altitude flights.

In the opinion of many experts, this new technology represent a major breakthrough in solar energy. With energy prices exploding, solar represents the best solution to decreasing our dependence on limited oil and natural gas resources. Fortunately, the sun will be providing free power for the foreseeable future.
